“The circus arrives without warning”
I have so loved this opening line and closing line. I have read a few books that are deviced this well. All the hullabaloo about this book quells as I turn to the last page and finally shut this book.
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is 496 pages long and most likely to put you in a reading slump. I have been hit by one as I write this review. Nonetheless this one turned out to be a riveting read.
The Night Circus was a book of the month for Mumbaibookstagram. Though I began the book in July I could only finish it in August. I kept picking it up, reading some and putting away. You can say that I savoured it bit by bit but I know that wasn’t the case. Well, while I was into it I was enjoying it but when I shut the book it didn’t pull me back. There are pages filled with descriptions. And it can get a lot boring. However, the minute I was nearing the climax something clicked and I couldn’t stop myself from reading it through the night. Turns out the book was engrossing towards the end.
The novel follows Marco and Celia’s love story. The two are pitted against each other in a magical challenge. The circus is their battlefield. But the two rivals fall for each other. What is to be the future of this magical circus and if these two ever come together, becomes the rest of the story.
You won’t find blurb of the book on the back cover. Rather there are multiple reviews blurbed on the back cover and first few pages of the book.
The writing is lucid and in present tense. Initially you might find yourself lost but slowly the circus will pull you with it’s magic. It is enchanting how the author comes a full circle with this one-of-a-kind circus. Every new phase is preceded by a description that gives you a glimpse of what is to follow.
Overall, it was an enjoyable read. My advice, do keep it as your leisure read.
