“When did we become so devoid of feelings?
When did we become people we used to hate?
Do we even like who we have become?”

These are very simplistically put deep questions from Raisha Lalwani’s The Diary On The Fifth Floor. The book is a collection of short stories published by Rupa Publications.

The book though is a collection of short stories yet it is said through the diary of Savannah Khanna. She is twenty something and suffers deeply upon seeing the insensitive side of the people around her. She pens those stories in her diary. This diary she hands over to Dr. Berry who is treating her. And though there is no particular treatment for such an ailment Dr. Berry makes her see life in a different light.

The writing style is lucid, easy and free flowing. Like I mentioned earlier the stories are simplistically told but have a sharp edge. They are so alive and poignant that they are sure to leave an impact on your mind. I was deeply moved by all the stories. They made me ponder. But the stories that were extremely spine chilling for me were, The Princess and Once Upon A Night.

Being a mother who is in a dilemma if at all to take up a job and whether to leave behind your only baby in a daycare, these two stories shook me to the bones. I don’t trust anyone when it comes to taking care of my baby and when I read these two stories I was shattered. I avoid newspapers only because they are filled with crude facts and that’s something that disturbs me deeply. Only time will tell if I take up a job and if I agree to leave my baby in a daycare but for now, I am holding on to her tight.

These stories are true and show us the insensitive, ruthless and what I called the “pesudo practical side” of the society. There were real testing times for me like Savannah but I had to stand up for myself all on my own only for my daughter. People who were friends with me all my life turned their back on me because they always considered me to be an emotional fool. This book is for all those insensitive pricks. Take a cue, guys, be human, act humane.
