Mumbai can already feel a slight dip in the weather and when that’s so, I usually love to curl up with a good romance or thriller. The Hawa Mahal murders by N.J.Kulkarni is one such thriller .
The book follows the story of a murder of an elite that takes place in Hawa Mahal, a housing society located in the plush area of Mumbai. This murder case isn’t solved when there is another murder. The watchman of the society surely isn’t the murderer but then who is and what’s the motive behind these murders, forms the rest of the story.
Like most whodunnits, this book keeps you hooked. It follows a trail and then starts branching out making us ponder about these murders. The prologue of the book gives us the history behind the Hawa Mahal’s existence but that’s that. With multiple characters at her disposal, the author deviates in different directions. She keeps the chapters episodic, short and to the point. Also the sentences are short and clipped adding to the reading experience. One, zaps through the book in no time.
The author tries to add the possibilities of necrophilia and prostitution in the scenario but doesn’t stick to it. What we find in these pages is lost treasure, love, extra-marital affair, history, psychopaths that are mingled with murders.
The script is tightly knit within the premises of Hawa Mahal and doesn’t sway too much. It is unpredictable but the pace kept fluctuating for me.
Overall, it is complex making and it zigzags through different alleys before arriving at the conclusion.
All-in-all, it makes for a good thriller to curl up with.

Thriller movies and books interest me a lot. I often read them in my school times and borrowed them from one of my dad’s friend’s daughter. She was always so updated with thriller books stocks.
