If your heart is always full of fairytales and sparkles then just don’t miss out on North Child by Edith Pattou.

This book was published in 2006 and every since it has been loved by readers across the world. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the uncorrected proof copy, sent by the publishers US Bourne.

The book follows the story of Rose. She is meant to be an adventurous kid as per the direction superstitions of Norse mythology. And as her destiny wills she is taken to the far lands of North by a talking White Bear. This White Bear is a human trapped under enchantments of a Troll Queen. And the only way to be human again is if a maiden lives with him for a year.

I never read blurbs and I always love to surprised by books. This book was a pleasant surprise and a lovely adventure as well. The author has not only planned the whole retelling in the warmest way but she makes sure to keep the suspense alive till the last page of the book. The book is peppered with Norse myths. The narrative is certainly linear and there is a shift in narrators throughout the book. The chapters are short and to the point.

While I was reading this one I was reminded how very close this came to being similar to A Court of Thorns and Roses. And perhaps if you have read ACOTAR even you will see the resemblance. However, both the stories seemed to be influenced by the fairy tale East of the Sun and West of the Moon and hence the similarity.

Overall, I loved this book and there was not a dull moment while I was reading it. I was literally lapping up every word, frantically turning pages to know more about Rose and the White Bear. It was one satisfying read for me. And if you love fairytales, adventures and fantasy then don’t miss out on this fabulous read.
