Short reads are a breather. These refresh my mind from time to time. So when I came across Sabarna Roy’s Etchings of the first quarter of 2020, I made sure I grab it. The name was quite intriguing.

Sabarna Roy pens his daily life and interesting encounters in the book Etchings of the first quarter of 2020. The book is an amalgamation of his letters, dialogues with people he met, encounters with different characters and some poems.

The book was quite an anecdotal read. The poems are penned in blank verse. These poems are dark and spine chilling. With his writing the author evokes the senses of touch, smell, sight, sound and taste from time to time. This book is more like author’s accounts of the events.

Also it is quite insightful and literary heavy as it mentions varied lauded pieces of literature like Lolita, Anna Karenina, Milind Kundera etc. These crisp notes from the author’s diary shows us how well read the author is and it certainly makes us ponder.

This one was a quick read. And the highlight of this short read for me was the poem on Jallianwala Bagh and the notes on letters of T.S Eliot to his love interest which were unveiled only recently.

If you would like to read something different then pick up this book.
