It is a huge responsibility to write about history and more so if you are penning Maratha history. The history created by Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is magnanimous and luminous. And author Gautam Pradhan has done this job truly well in his books.

The idea of putting forth the Maratha history in English so that it reaches the young crowd is what attracted me to his books. His second book, Lord of the royal umbrella, captures the the appellation “Chatrapati” and what led to the citizens calling him so.

A Hindu king who became a living nightmare for the Mughal rulers, now that’s an invincible feat to achieve. And the author has seamlessly woven the heroics of a mighty warrior, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, in his book. The period between 1661 to 1674, better called as Shivakal, is wonderfully enunciated in this book. The clash and win over Shaista Khan, the treaty of Purandar, the historic escape from Agra, the martyrdom of Tanaji Malusare are the prominent events that the book expands on. The writing is gripping. It makes the history come alive for us, readers.

The climax of the book marks the golden moments of the golden era when Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned as the sovereign ruler of Deccan as was the wish of Maa saheb, Jijamata and every citizen of Swaraj. The coronation took place on 6th June 1674. The book brings forth this event in such a way that it is sure to give you goosebumps.

Last word – This book can ably educate people world over about the lion hearted Marathas and our golden hearted king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
