“And when the Moon shone in the heavens the Nightingale flew to the Rose-tree, and set her breast against the thorn. All night long she sang with her breast against the thorn, and the cold crystal Moon leaned down and listened. All night long she sang, and the thorn went deeper and deeper into her breast, and her life-blood ebbed away from her.”

Oscar Wilde, the name itself is enough to make you pick up this short story. I read this short story in the month of February and it is still so fresh in my mind, much like the thorn piercing in the heart. The vivid imagery that intermingles tragedy and fantasy is certainly the USP of this work.

Alongside is a story that’s plotted so well that it sticks around. This story has a texture, a music and a sensation rarely felt. The theme of unrequited love and the sacrifice that follows has gripped my heart ever since I read it. Never had a tale of unrequited love been told so dexterously.

This isn’t a review. I would urge you all to read this story atleast once in your lifetime because the words, the story, the characters will linger for long and I assure that the aftertaste of this story is unforgettable.

The nightingale and the rose instantly became my favourite short story ever told.
