Ruskin Bond once said that stories are hidden everywhere, waiting for an author to find them and lay them on a page. They could be following as you take a stroll, or be waiting at the end of the road, or simply appear while you sip your morning coffee. Author Manoj Kumar Sharma found his inspiration to write an anthology of short stories as he was walking by the Juhu beach and this gave birth to his latest book – Juuhhhuuuu. 

After Mirro, Me No Pause Me Play, Sharma brings for us a book full of variegated flavours that welcomes the readers on a wonderful ride. These collections of fast-paced tales have a common setting— Mumbaikar’s most favoured Juhu Beach. All the stories stand as a testament of love in an increasingly complex world. 

The book contains three short stories, each is unique, sporting an air of mystery  while delivering an impeccable glimpse into human nature, sensitivity, and love. Every story unfolds with much grace. These stories are a treat to any thriller lovers as the narrative triggers the readers to solve the who-dunnit even before the police detectives can. The narratives have a sense of authenticity and an emotional depth that brings forth the richness of human experiences. 

Manoj Sharma uses a simple language that promises comprehension and a smooth flow of the narrative. The writing is evocative and at times lyrical. Sharma portrays a vivid picture of love in it’s different shades and hues. Furthermore, I loved how efficiently and subtly the author captures the raw emotions and simultaneously evokes the heinousness of the crimes with lucidity. 

Out of all three stories, I enjoyed reading the second story: Immersions, Emersions, Emotions. This story is filled with thrill,  mass murder, and love. Here, we find a defector with unreciprocated love takes the spotlight from other characters.  So, if you’re a die-hard fan of mystery novels but also want to get a glimpse at the backstory that led to such a crime, this book might be the one you’re looking for.

All-in-all, Juuhhhuuuu, much like it’s predecessors, navigates the complex maze of human emotions and deftly presents characters who confront adversity head-on with an unwavering spirit of courage and determination. Here the relationships are tested, societal norms challenged and the essence of yesteryear’s Mumbai recreated.
